Welcome potential future member and thank you for considering membership at Garden City Park Volunteer Department. Volunteer firefighting or Volunteer Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a very rewarding and valuable way to serve your community. It takes dedication and many hours of training to become a firefighter or emergency medical technician (EMT).

How do I become a Volunteer Member?

  1. Fill out our initial Interest form here.
  2. A physical or digital copy of application will be sent to you.
  3. Schedule an interview with the recruitment committee, chief staff and company officers.
  4. Schedule your department physical.
  5. And we will take care of the rest (application review, background screening, etc.)

Once the process is complete, you will be sworn in as a member of Garden City Park Fire Department by the district commissioners and then your training will begin. We complete in house training as well as have members complete training at Fire Service Academy and outside EMS agencies.

What are the responsibilities of a member of the Garden City Park Fire Department?

The general responsibilities of members include but are not limited to attending all department and company level meetings and drills, complete all required training (dependent on which company you join), attend department, community events and parades.

 

What are the general requirements for becoming a firefighter or EMT with GCPFD?

You must be at least 18 years old, be in good health, and a resident in the vicinity of the Garden City Park Fire District or within one mile of our district. You can view a map of our district here.

What are the different companies within Garden City Park Fire Department?

The Garden City Park Fire Department has a truck company, three engine companies and an EMS company, find out more on each company’s webpage found under the tab “Companies.”

How many fire stations does the Garden City Park Fire Department have and what are their locations?

The Garden City Park Fire Department has 2 stations. Headquarters, which is located at 2264 Jericho Turnpike, is the house for Truck Company 1, Engine Company 2 & Rescue Company 5. Our Station 2 is located at 1030 Denton Avenue. Station 2 is home for Engine Company 3, Engine Company 4 & Rescue Company 5.

 

What is the difference between Truck and Engine Companies?

The truck company operates a 95 ft Ladder Truck & Heavy Rescue. The truck company’s primary function is searching for life at a structure fire. They are also responsible for extrication calls such as a person trapped in a car due to a motor vehicle accident. The engine companies on the other hand operate a single fire engine. The engine company’s primary function at a fire is to put the fire out. The engine company will work with the truck to locate and put the fire out. You will learn more about the differences once in as a member and start training.

 

 

What is the Rescue Company?

Garden City Park Fire Department provides the community, and at times neighboring communities, an emergency ambulance service. Rescue Company 5 is made up of “Basic Life Support” (BLS) EMT’s and paramedics. Garden City Park FD has one ambulance at each station. The Rescue company’ primary function is to respond to medical emergencies and provide pre-hospital care. They as well assist on fire scenes as medical protection / REHAB for fire personnel.

 

 

Can I join a fire company and the rescue company?

Absolutely! Just be ready to dedicate time to both companies, each hold their own meeting, drills and as well as their own responsibilities you will have to maintain.
