MVA: Overturned Vehicle

The Garden City Park Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident today at 9am on the corner of Shelter Rock Rd and Old Searingtown Road.  One person was injured and removed to an area hospital.  The accident occurred when a passenger vehicle and a snowplow collided. A portion of Shelter Rock Road remained closed to traffic for over an hour.



     



 

NEW YORK FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY-FLOOR COLLAPSE

Owego (Upstate-NY) A Firefighter was killed in the Line of Duty and another was injured while operating at a mutual aid a fire in Newark Valley. The fire started just before 11pm last night and several nearby fire departments, including Owego, were called to assist the Newark Fire Department.


Owego Firefighters Matthew Porcari and Daniel Gavin were in the building when the floor collapsed. FF Porcari died in the fire. Gavin was taken to Wilson Hospital with burns before being transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

   


 

Western-NY Firefighters Shot at Fire

Monday, December 24, 2012   Webster, NY (Near Rochester):  Two firefighters have died after being shot at the scene of a fire on Lake Road in Webster early this morning.

Webster Police confirm that another two firefighters were also shot. They are being treated at Strong Memorial Hospital and are both listed in guarded condition.

The fire started in a Lake Road house, near Bay Road. Webster Fire Department reports that an unknown gunman opened fire on crews as they arrived on scene.

The fire then spread to three houses before firefighters could move in to extinguish the blaze.

Webster Police report that there is no longer an active shooter.

   


 

Local Volunteers helping Sandy Survivors

Sunday, December 23, 2012   The Firefighters, EMS Personnel, Ladies Auxiliary, and Junior Firefighters of the Garden City Park Fire Department are busy this weekend preparing Holiday Meals for the South Shore Fire Departments and surrounding communities that were devastated by Sandy. 

In conjunction with the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management and Island Harvest Food Bank, your local Garden City Park Volunteers will be cooking and preparing the food provided by OEM.  The volunteer chefs will cook approximately 36 Turkeys, 10 Hams, 300 pounds of potatoes, and 150 cans of vegetables.  They are utilizing the kitchens at both fire stations and will be going nearly around the clock in this ‘all-hands’ endeavor.

FEMA Urges Prompt Return of SBA Disaster Loan Application

NEW YORK – Survivors of Hurricane Sandy, who received a loan application from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA), should take the time to fill it out and return it promptly. This includes homeowners, renters, business owners, and non-profit organizations that have called the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to register for disaster assistance.

“SBA is our partner in disaster recovery. If you received an application from the SBA, whether you are a business, homeowner or renter, you need to return the application.” said Michael F. Byrne, coordinating officer for the federal recovery operations in the affected area. “Filling out the application is a necessary step to being considered for other forms of assistance.”

Legislative Victory! Senate Passes AFG/SAFER Reauthorization and Other NVFC Priorities

USFA Reauthorization and PSOB Improvements Act Added to Defense Authorization Bill 

On November 29, the U.S. Senate agreed by a voice vote to an amendment offered by Senators Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Susan Collins (R-ME), Thomas Carper (D-DE), and Scott Brown (R-ME) to add language to S. 3254, the National Defense Authorization Act, reauthorizing the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs through FY 2017. The amendment also included language reauthorizing the United States Fire Administration (USFA).


In the days leading up to the vote, National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) members sent more than 1,000 messages using our Capwiz service to Senate offices asking them to support the amendment. NVFC staff and board members were actively lobbying for passage of the amendment as well.

NEW YORK FIREFIGHTER KILLED WHILE SERVING OUR COUNTRY

Monday, November 12, 2012   3 U.S. Army Reservists from small towns in three different parts of upstate New York were killed in the Line of Duty in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle. The Department of Defense identified the soldiers as Staff Sgt. Dain Venne, 29, of Port Henry; Spc. Ryan Jayne, 22, of Campbell, Spc. Brett E. Gornewicz, 27, of Alden. They died of wounds suffered Saturday when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosion device in Paktia province. All three were members of the Oswego-based 444th Engineer Co. and were assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion of the Vicksburg, Miss.-based 412th Theater Engineer Command. They were combat engineers conducting "route-clearing" duties when an IED blasted their vehicle.
